So you may have heard that we're in a recession. You may not have, but only if you're deaf, blind, friendless, television-less and have lost the key to your front door. However, to me, the recession didn't actually seem that drastic. I'm aware that it's affected the availability of credit, international trade, interest rates and so on, but one thing that I never thought would be effected is fashion.
According to several fashion magazines, spring/summer '09 has no distinctive trends from any designers. Apparently, the main focus of designers seems to be timeless pieces, which has been followed up with advice to fashion followers to invest in classic pieces, nothing which will go out of style, but pieces which can be worn again and again.
Despite this, there seems to be certain reoccurring styles from the four Fashion Capitals, such as colour blocking. softer shades of nude, trophy jackets, futuristic pieces, the Afro-centric look, and seductive, sheer and suggestive, yet classy pieces.
This certainly suggests otherwise in my opinion, yet the dramatic idea that fashion is suffering on par with banks has been echoing around. It conjured up the idea that designers had all locked away their creativity and played it safe this season, in order to reach out to those suffering in these dire times. However, looking at catwalk reports, the statement necklaces and lion-like skirts beg to differ.
