Britain is the most paranoid country in the world. Fact. Well, at least, that's what I've been told. We’re a country of serious surveillance, with more CCTV cameras than anywhere else, and let's face it - if we really wanted to, we could find out what our favourite celebrities have had for breakfast every day this week. Or even, what their dogs have had.
However, even though everyone seems to complain about this violation of privacy, the majority of the population are addicted to Big Brother. Which is a show based around cameras invading every single inch of people's privacy, and we can't get enough of it. Hmmm....
I'm very ashamed to admit that I'm amongst the thousands that watch Big Brother, after all, it's pointless, demeaning, and really, the perfect word to sum it up is 'rubbish'. What's not to like? It's one thing, though, to judge those that watch it, but how about the contestants?
Even the ones that we can empathise with, the contestants that seems perfectly normal and friendly, surely there must be some weird reason that they decide to go on the show? I can't help but have little respect for them, just because they've made the decision to broadcast their every move, and sometimes even...their moves (if you get me), on television.
I once read a book that talked about how important ethics are, that we need to live our lives by them - and I found this very interesting - because I didn't really think I had many, and I hadn't really listed this as a way to judge character. However, I guess we already live our ever day lives through our morals without being hardcore vegetarian, abstaining, tee total Christians; the way we treat those around us, for example.
It's funny because, I won't go anywhere near a KFC, and I don't eat meat or chicken. But when it comes to other aspects of life, I don't really care as much; I spit my chewing gum on the floor most days of the week and wouldn’t say no if someone offered me exam answers...
Is it our morals that define who we are? In my opinion, I think it is. I think that our own interpretations of what's acceptable behaviour are very tell-tale of what kind of people we are. I once got asked, 'would you visit an abattoir if your job depended on it?' and I found myself saying 'no’. It sounds stupid, but I would rather finish the day with my morals intact, rather than a pay check. That may make me boring, but hopefully when cows rule the world, I’ll get my karma.
